Toronto, ON Canada

November 10 - 17
Theatre Espace Go

Playwright Annabel Soutar teams up with actors Alex Ivanovici and Brett Watson to create a thrilling theatrical response to the rise of extremism and tribalism in political discourse today.

The Assembly invites the left and the right to face each other in a live setting and to attempt to transcend their ideological labels through listening.

Each performance invites audience members to join the stage and participate in a long table where they can engage in difficult conversations about current events that affect their communities. Themes addressed in The Assembly include immigration and freedom of speech.

SOUNDING THUNDER: THE SONG OF FRANCIS PEGAHMAGABOW

A musical journey into the life of the renowned Ojibwe WWI sniper and decorated officer of the Canadian military, Francis Pegahmagabow.  Composed by Tim Corlis and written by Ojibwe poet Armand Garnet Ruffo, Sounding Thunder is a complex work divided into three acts, exploring Pegahmagabow’s early years immersed in the world of the Anishinaabe spirits, his extraordinary accomplishments in the trenches of WWI, and finally his political life as Chief of the Wausauksing Ojibwe and founder of the early Indigenous political moment in Canada.

Written for multiple roles, both human and non-human, Sounding Thunder draws upon the memoirs of Pegahmagabow himself, family memories, and historical sources to introduce spectators to a little-known side of Canadian history while offering a fascinating story and a dynamic musical experience.

A multi-disciplinary production with filmography, chamber music, dance, drumming and narration.

NANO STERN – ‘SANTIAGO’ RELEASE CONCERT

Nano Stern presents, Santiago, his new EP live. at the Teatro Nescafe Wednesday, January 17, 2018. Santiago is an experimental work in which Nano immersed himself completely in the whole creative process, performing all the instruments as he did in his first album.

"After 10 years since publishing my first album, I decided to revisit that process. It was a work of intense rediscovery, in which I tried explicitly to look for new places and sounds for myself, without betraying my identity or repeating formulas ", explains the singer-songwriter.

UP NEXT Artist PITCH - APAP - NYC

Playwright Annabel Soutar will present Seeds at the UP NEXT Artist PITCH session at APAP:
Friday, January 12th, from 1pm – 3pm

Seeds is Annabel Soutar’s hit documentary play about the four-year legal battle between feisty Saskatchewan farmer Percy Schmeiser and Monsanto Inc. Based on court trial transcripts, interviews with Schmeiser, Monsanto representatives, and with farmers, academics, lawyers and scientists, Seeds leads us through a suspenseful labyrinth of legal conflicts around patent rights, scientific showdowns about GM food, and property clashes between farmers and the biotechnology industry.

While debates about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) escalate around the world, Seeds provides its audience with an entertaining platform to become informed about how GMOs were introduced into the North American food supply.

Paco Peña: Esencias

In 1966, Paco Peña moved to London and with his virtuosity and artistry soon made a name for himself as a solo guitarist in a city that was gripped by Jimi Hendrix mania. Despite his rapid success as a soloist, he did not wait long to found a flamenco company, and that first show in 1970, with just a handful of performers, struck the path that has led to Patrias (2014), his last and most ambitious one to date.

Following the inspirational complexity explored in the preparation of Patrias, Peña has decided for his next project to return to the fascinating times, all those years ago, when the urgent challenge was to search for the potential of the guitar alone transmitting the best qualities of the art of flamenco.

Esencias is about the music of flamenco.
