Taking part in University of Ottawa's recent "Guitare Alla Grande" Festival, Ben gave two outstanding lectures. The first centered on the art of transcription, on the issues that must be addressed when trying to best keep the spirit and feel of a work alive when set to its new medium. From Strauss to Hendrix, Ben took students through a process of integrity verses ingenuity, resulting in something that almost resembles a new composition.
A second lecture focused even more on that most intimate relationship between the performer, the text, and the composer(s), focusing especially on urtext editions. Ben focused on exploring how one navigates which version is best, how much to change it, and how to change it with respect and balance in this dynamic and challenging relationship.
